NBC to Broadcast London Games

London elated

NBC shelled out $2 billion for the the rights to broadcast the 2010 and 2012 Olympic Games (in Vancouver and London, respectively). Spending $1.18 billion alone for the 2012 Games, NBC easily outbid Fox and ABC two years ago, says Media Life.

There’s bound to be disappointment at NBC that the games will not be held in New York - a US host improves ratings - but not much real surprise (truly, the only big surprise is that London, not Paris, won the bid). The good news for NBC is that London’s time difference is less than that of the previous two summer games, in Athens and Sydney. For those two Games, snagging a large viewing audience was made difficult by the fact that, by primetime viewing hours, events were over and results already available.

Last summer, the Olympics’ household rating rose nine percent over the 2000 games, to 15.0.
