Mini Launches ‘Word-of-the-Day’ at Pumps

Mini Cooper launches another innovative advertising campaign with “word-of-the-day” trivia at gas pumps, Adrants reports. The made-up words are meant to entertain people as they pump gas. Example: “Spumped” defines the phenomenon of arriving at a gas station and being unable to recall what side of the car your tank is on.

Bryant Back in the Game

NBA star Kobe Bryant will appear in Nike ads in Sports Illustrated - his first Nike appearance since his arrest for alleged rape two years ago, Adrants reports. He’ll be pushing the Huarache 2K5 footwear product.

According to a spokesman for the company, there has been no change in Bryant’s contractual status with Nike.

Ad Spending Slows in England

England’s advertising economy may be in for troubling times in the wake of last week’s bombings, but the attacks themselves will not necessarily be the cause of the predicted downward trend, Media Life reports.

The worst effect an event such as this has on advertising is generally a temporary disruption as previously planned ads get bumped for editorial and some advertisers pull ads that might be seen as insensitive. In general, the effects on advertising can’t be measured because they get lost in the prevailing economic trend, Adam Smith, head of knowledge management at ZenithOptimedia told Media Life.

Publicis to Handle Vault

Publicis will handle creative duties on Coca-Cola’s new drink, Vault, according to Adweek. The agency’s first duty is to create TV advertising for the beverage. Publicis beat out Kirshenbaum Bond in New York, Wieden Kennedy in Portland, and one undisclosed shop, the article said.

Y&R Competes Against Self

Y&R, New York has handled the Cadbury Schweppes brand Dr Pepper since 1969, but may possibly lose creative control, as the client is asking for other creative teams from other offices within the Y&R network to pitch ideas, AdAge reports.

Creative control on another Cadbury Schweppes brand, 7 Up, moved from Y&R, New York to Y&R, San Francisco last year, with positive results, according to Jim Trebilcock, senior VP of marketing for carbonated soft drinks.
