Product Placement to Nth Degree in ‘Must Love Dogs’

must love dogs.jpg

In the upcoming film Must Love Dogs, online dating service PerfectMatch.com has been extensively written into the script, according to AdAge. There was no product placement fee for the service to appear in the film; rather, PerfectMatch.com supplied its technical services to production of the film and coordinated co-promotions with the studio.

PerfectMatch.com will co-market the film through its own media buys. The ad and promotional value of the entire deal is estimated to be $7 million. The connection between PerfectMatch.com and the film began over 18 months ago, while the movie was in script stage and using an imaginary online dating service instead of PerfectMatch.com.

Some in the industry say down-in-the-dumps box office receipts for movies and DVD sales may be proof of consumers’ dismay that entertainment is being supplanted by product placement.
