Nielsen Proposes Self Regulation, Media Buyers Agree

Media buyers and ad groups who have mainly watched the discussions about the FAIR Act - proposed legislation that would give the federal government oversight authority for the accuracy of media ratings systems - from the sidelines have added their voices to those arguing against government involvement, AdAge reports.

Advertisers have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of a daily ratings system for years, said Kathy Crawford, president of local broadcast for WPP Group’s MindShare, at Wednesday’s hearings. She feels concerned that the legislation would slow ratings improvements and prevent new competition, leaving advertisers unsure of whether they are spending their money wisely.

But in lieu of the bill, which would require TV ratings services such as Nielsen’s controversial local people meter to achieve Media Rating Council accreditation before being introduced, Nielsen Media Research said it would support the concept of a Voluntary Code of Conduct, now under discussion by the MRC and accredited research firms, Mediaweek writes.
