The free newspaper model is being embraced by corporations that have their roots in pay dailies, such as the New York Times Co. and Knight Ridder, as freebies become the most widely read papers in Manhattan, London, Paris, Stockholm and Toronto, Forbes.com writes. Tribune’s am New York, for example, boasts a circulation of 318,000 in the second quarter of this year - the highest newspaper circulation in the City, topping that of The New York Times and New York Daily News, according to a report by the Certified Audit of Circulations.
Though am New York has enjoyed only a “handful of profitable months” since launching in October, 2003, it has steadily increased advertising sales, starting with 20 pages two years ago and frequently topping out at 48 pages a day currently.
Metro New York, the City’s other free daily, lost more than $1 million a month in the first quarter of 2005 and continued to lose money in the second quarter - but it reported a 50 percent jump in advertising sales, according to an individual familiar with the company’s finances. New York may soon have a third free daily, if recent word that Richard Branson’s Virgin Group is considering one is true.
Market research commissioned by a number of media companies suggests that free dailies attract a younger audience, and one that would not normally purchase a pay newspaper. AM New York says 62 percent of its readers don’t buy pay dailies.
