Once-Revered Baltimore Sun Faces Competition from Free Daily

A new free daily from Philip Anschutz’s Examiner chain will launch in Baltimore, challenging the Baltimore Sun at a time when declining circulation and recent cutbacks are harming the city’s single remaining daily paper, Media Life reports. Anschutz’s Clarity Media Group will launch the Baltimore Examiner as a free daily tabloid sometime next year, joining the Washington Examiner and the San Francisco Examiner.

Like its predecessors, the Baltimore Examiner will publish six days a week and will be home delivered as well as being available at news boxes throughout the city. It will offer local news and target affluent neighborhoods.

But while the Washington and San Francisco papers distribute about a third the number of papers as their paid competition, the Baltimore Examiner will distribute 250,000 copies per day compared to the Sun’s 246,000.

It’s difficult to say how much cause for worry the Sun actually has in terms of losing advertisers to the Examiner, as that company doesn’t release financial data.

The Sun just launched its first re-design in a decade, improving readability, brightening colors, and adding some new sections to its mix in the hopes of better reflecting “the demands and interests of readers in this busy, complex, high-definition world of ours,” said editor Tim Franklin.
