Radio One intends to launch the first national talk radio network geared for a black audience, according to the Associated Press (via Billboard Radio Monitor). The network, which is still being developed, will air 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and include a political morning show hosted by Al Sharpton.
This is Radio One’s latest effort to move from a pure radio company into a catchall for black consumers, who spend more than $750 billion a year. Last year, the company launched TV One, a cable network backed by Comcast, and earlier this year it bought a 51 percent interest in Reach Media, which syndicates the Tom Joyner Morning Show.
Radio One is attracting both listeners and big time advertisers: its gospel station in Atlanta, 97.5 Praise FM, has seen revenue grow 35 percent last year with supermarkets, retailers, automakers, and other large companies making up about 90 percent of its advertisers.
