Newspapers to Carry Spider-Man Re-Issues

News America Marketing, in collaboration with Marvel Entertainment, will begin to distribute re-issues of the Amazing Spider-Man comic book in Sunday newspapers beginning in summer, 2006, Editor & Publisher reports. Circulation for the Spider-Man series will be 10 million across metro markets, and will begin with the original first comic book published in 1963. Each original comic book will be split into two and published on consecutive weeks.

Firefox Launches Ad Contest

Firefox has kicked off the second part of its Firefox Flicks campaign, launching a contest for 30-second spots for the browser by professional, student and aspiring filmmakers that will be considered for a TV campaign, reports ClickZ (via MarketingVox). Top ads will also win prizes, including a $5,000 gift certificate at B&H Photo, a multi-screen LCD display from 9x Media, and a media center PC from Alienware. The ads will be reviewed by a panel of judges from the film, television and advertising industries. The goal of the campaign is to increase awareness of Firefox among mainstream consumers and persuading them to visit getfirefox.com.

PostcardMania Donates Services to Nonprofits

PostcardMania has set up a division within the company with the sole purpose of handling pro-bono work for nonprofit organizations, as long as the organization has the purpose of “assisting mankind to improve his lot and make the world a better place,” the company announced.

A recent campaign saw PostcardMania donating the design, printing, and mailing of 12,000 postcards to promote the 17th annual “Say No to Drugs” Holiday Classic 5K and 10K run in Downtown Clearwater, Florida. The highest-ever number of runners registered for the event.

Chisinau Bans Women’s Legs

The Moldovan capital Chisinau has banned women’s legs from billboards and other forms of outdoor advertising, according to the Moscow News. Acting mayor Vasily Ursu said that showing women’s legs on billboards violated ethical standards. But he also said, about a pantyhose ad from local hosiery firm Ponti that was ordered to be removed from city streets, that “If you show me similar billboards in other cities, I may let them be used again.”

Ursu also ordered billboards showing large bottle of vodka to be removed.

ABC Bids Farewell to Monday Night Football

Last night marked the last Monday Night Football telecast from ABC, with the telecast moving next year to ESPN as part of an 8-year deal, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes. To date, Monday Night Football was the second-longest running primetime television show (1970-2005), following 60 Minutes (1968-current).

Google: No ‘Doodads Flying’ on Main Search Page, Ever

Rumors that Google will allow image ad units on its main search page have Google execs up in arms, according to Mediapost. Marissa Mayer, vp of search products and user experience for Google, wrote on the Google Blog that, “There will not be crazy, flashy, graphical doodads flying and popping up all over the Google site. Ever.”

Sirius Signs 3 Millionth Subscriber

Sirius Satellite Radio signed its 3 millionth subscriber over the holidays, Mediapost writes, helping the satellite radio service move a little closer to a predicted 3.2 million subscribers by year’s end. XM Satellite Radio has signed 5 million subscribers.

Between the two, satellite radio has a presence in about 7 percent of U.S. households. According to the article, expectations have grown that satellite may become more of a “sponsorship or advertising phenomenon” than a subscription-based model.
