Staffers filled the Billy Goat Tavern, a popular bar with journalists, to wait for the final bulletin to appear. Nearby, a banner hung bearing the wire service’s motto: “If your mother says she loves you, check it out.”
The Chicago Tribune, sole owner of the service for the last six years, announced in early December that the service was shutting down, in part because rivals were taking news from the wires and putting it on their websites before the Tribune had a chance to report it.
