Super Bowl Snags Record Ad Prices

Sources close to ABC are saying that 30-second Super Bowl XL spots are selling for $2.5 to $2.6 million which, if true, marks record prices for Super Bowl ads, CNN reports. Last month, reports said that the ads were going for $2.4 million - the same price tag as last year’s game, which more than 86 million people in the U.S. watched, according to figures from Nielsen Media Research.

Advertisers for this year’s game include Gillette (for the new Fusion razor), Anheuser-Busch, Pepsi, and General Motors. But other advertisers believe that this year’s Olympics might be a more cost effective choice. Still others, such as McDonald’s, are skipping this year’s game in part because they are not happy with the scrutiny placed on Super Bowl ads by viewers and critics.

That scrutiny hasn’t stopped GoDaddy.com from wanting to advertise, however. The domain-name registry came under fire last year for its risqué Super Bowl ad, but nonetheless is in talks with ABC to get another, similar ad approved for this year’s game, Brandweek reports.
