International Players Launching English-Language All-News TV Channels

Several international all-news TV channels are preparing to launch English-language programs this year, including a French project, which remains unnamed, and is scheduled to start by December with $91 million in government funding, the International Herald Tribune reports.

In the spring, Al Jazeera plans to roll out its English version, a Kremlin-funded news channel in English, Russia Today, began broadcasting last month, a group of investors and supporters met in Nairobi last month to plan the creation of a pan-African channel in French and English, and a number of Indian channels are among the stations that hope to compete with CNN.

The stations have more in common than the English Language. They’re also having trouble selling ads. “There is no global advertising or commercial market,” said Cristoph Lanz, managing director of advertisers at Germany’s Deutsche Welle, which has been producing a bilingual German and English news program since 1992. “There are only a handful of really global companies, and even some German companies like Siemens are not selling themselves as German companies.”
