If GoDaddy.com manages to get a Super Bowl ad cleared for broadcast by ABC, it may have another hurdle to jump: the NFL plans to review any commercial from the domain name registry company, as well, Adweek reports. At least, that’s what GoDaddy CEO Bob Parsons wrote in his blog yesterday.
ABC, Parsons says, has rejected 10 versions of the ad featuring Candice Michelle (of last year’s controversial GoDaddy Super Bowl fame). “…It’s entirely possible that the NFL’s request to review our commercial could be to punish us, in true NFL style, for the commercial we ran during last year’s Super Bowl. I sincerely hope this is not the case,” Parsons wrote.
But the NFL has denied that it has told ABC to submit any GoDaddy ads for final approval, saying the league only reviews ads from official sponsors, and only when the NFL logo is used.
Parsons’ strategy looks to repeat last year’s PR boon, when the spot run during the Super Bowl was yanked before its second airing for being too controversial, Mediapost writes.
