Media companies can take advantage of the web’s community features and their TV shows’ online fan bases to help build their audiences, according panelists at the Digital Hollywood conference in New York, reports MediaPost (via MarketingVox). Dave Panos, CEO of a social media technology site Pluck.com, said users become brands’ best promoters.
Battlestar Galactica is a prime example. One of the show’s producers, Ron Moore, has a blog on SciFi.com. He answers questions that fans post on the show’s message boards, and produces commentary podcasts. Fans respond by creating their own podcasts, posting more questions, and blogging on their own.
And companies can use online fans to test new products, as Disney’s Family.com has been doing. Because the process and speed of testing is changing, companies can put up an application relatively quickly, get some feedback, and change it.
