Higher costs for marketing and acquiring new subscribers has resulted in a much wider loss in the fourth quarter for XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc., writes Yahoo News. Also, after quitting over a disagreement concerning the company’s direction, key director Pierce Roberts Jr. warns of a coming crisis.
Thursday, XM reported a $270.4 million loss for the October-December period, widening the $190.4 million loss it reported last year for the same period. At the end of 2005, the company had more than 5.9 million subscribers, an 84 percent increase from 2004. Hugh Panero, XM’s CEO, expects the company will reach profitability by the end of 2006, estimating 9 million subscribers and a subscription revenue of $860 million.
XM’s smaller rival, Sirius Satellite Radio Inc., has also reported losses, as both companies suffer financially to build their businesses, signing big contracts for programming with personalities like Howard Stern and Oprah Winfrey.
Volvo will become the first automaker to offer HD Radio as standard equipment in all but one of its 2009 models. The running change becomes effective next month on the 2009 Volvo model lineup.
