Recognizing the increasing percentage of Americans depending exclusively on cell phones, Arbitron announced Thursday it would begin including cell phone-only households in its radio diary surveys starting in 2008, writes Mediaweek. The company currently recruits its diarykeepers by calling only landline telephone exchanges.
In a study done by Arbitron comparing the listening patterns of cell-phone only persons to landliners, the company found that the two groups have different listening habits, but there was little change in the ratings.
According to Arbitron, the cell-phone only group tends to be aged 18 to 34 and spend more time listening to the radio. An estimated 7 percent of the population is cell phone only, according to a recent National Health Interview Survey.
