Audience for Gossip Magazines May Be Sated

Though American Media - owner of gossip rags including the Star, Globe, National Enquirer and Weekly World News - continues to sell millions of copies, circulation is slipping, reports the Economist.

The National Enquirer lost over 20 percent of its circulation between 2003 and the middle of 2005. At least half of the group’s publications are expected to report lower sales in June because of stricter industry standards for measuring circulation numbers.

The industry now faces the repercussions of its own genius. Half-a-dozen publications on newsstands now use Enquirer-like exclamation marks on covers to describe the life moments of the same small circle of celebrities, and the formatting of the rest of publications has been standardized. Current trends may lead to the number of magazines exceeding the number of celebrities they feature, the article states.

Price competition has also entered the industry, with In Touch and OK! reducing cover prices from around $3 to $1.99.
