CBS SportsLine’s ‘March Madness’ Streams Break Records

Early figures from CBS SportsLine’s free, live video streaming of the opening round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament on Thursday show that the online coverage is already approaching records, keeping in tune with CBS executives’ claims that the event will be the biggest live coverage in the internet’s history, writes Mediaweek.

Officials reported that streams peaked Thursday afternoon at 268,000 simultaneous streams, which smothers the previous record of 175,000 concurrent streams during AOL’s coverage of Live 8 concerts last summer.

Total streams, as of 5:30 p.m. Thursday, reached 1.2 million. CBS officials predict that total online audience for March Madness will exceed Live 8’s record of five million.

March Madness also sets records in advertising spending on network TV.
