In preparation for talks with major agencies and advertisers during the 2006-2007 upfront buying season, The Weather Channel - the only TV outlet that acknowledges buying so-called minute-by-minute ratings from Nielsen Media Research - has released new data purporting its viewers are more apt to be engaged with TV commercials, Mediapost reports.
The data shows that in January, TWC viewers stayed tuned in during commercial breaks 97 percent of the time - an index that covers total-day ratings for the month among the network’s targeted adults 25-54. The minute-by-minute performance is part of TWC’s upfront push to demonstrate its superior advertising effectiveness over other networks.
Mike Shaw, president of sales and marketing at ABC, said the issue of minute-by-minute data is “a two-way street,” and that if advertisers want to use minute-by-minute ratings, they must create more compelling ads, including in HD, to hinder viewer exodus during breaks. “They better start coming up with some better creative,” he added.
