Arbitron Accepts Inevitable, Agrees to Postpone PPM Houston Rollout

Arbitron, in a move that could throw off the timing of the entire rollout of the portable people meter service to the top 50 markets, has agreed to delay its rollout of the PPM service in Houston - planned for July - until it receives Media Rating Council accreditation, Mediaweek writes. Arbitron completed an MRC audit in February, but the Council is still in the process of reviewing the service and has yet to give accreditation, which could take several more months.

Arbitron will wait another 60 days after accreditation before designating the PPM data in Houston as its “currency,” the article states.

Arbitron’s decision comes in the wake of a struggle surrounding the new service. While advertisers and a number of agencies have signed on for the PPM, no Houston broadcasters have come aboard and two, Cox Radio and Radio One, have outright refused to have their signals encoded for the service.

The delay may give two other ratings services being considered by Clear Channel - Media Audit/Ipsos and Mediamark Research - a chance to catch up.
