Page Six Scandal to Impact Entire Gossip Industry

If proven true, the impact of the latest scandal dealing with The New York Post’s Page Six would reach beyond the parties involved and hit the ever-growing world of gossip news, writes Editor & Publisher.

Page Six contributor Jared Paul Stern allegedly solicited bribes topping $200,000 from a California billionaire in exchange for keeping his name out of the Post’s daily content - an act apparently caught on tape.

Even in the face of increasing gossip sources found on the web, television and in glossy print, Page Six has continued to be a must-read - having launched its own glossy magazine earlier this year. However, if Stern is found guilty, the entire Page Six franchise gets called in to question.

Since the story broke, rival papers have run wild with the story. The Times ran front-page coverage on the scandal Saturday and Sunday, with three stories on Sunday. The Daily News, the Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post have also covered the scandal.

However, as the gossip industry continues to grow, Page Six will probably survive, even if it has to endure a procedural review and a change in leadership.
