The number of people using mobile devices to access the internet is growing, especially in Europe and Asia, according to market research firm Ipsos Insight’s annual report, writes Yahoo.

Citibank: Print Needs to Prepare for Internet Peak & Decline

Internet advertising is poised to peak and possibly decline in the near future, according to advertiser Citibank. “Online seems to have leapfrogged right over other media, but given just what happened to the direct mail category over the last 10 years, the prediction for online is that it will spike pretty soon,” Mark Ingall, director of global strategic media and global marketing for Citibank said during a keynote at the Advertising Club of New York’s annual Magazine Day, MediaPost reports.

David Lee Roth’s ruinous career move as a radio talk show host may be ending after a four-month run, as CBS is allegedly axing him and bringing on raunchy talk jocks Opie and Anthony, the Boston Herald reports. CBS fired the pair four years ago after they broadcast a couple having sex in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York. They were also yanked off Boston’s WAAF-FM in 1998 after having erroneously told listeners - on April Fools Day - that the mayor of the city had died in a car crash in Florida.

Internet, with Ad Revenues at $12.5 Billion, Essential Component of Media Planning

U.S. internet advertising revenues totaled $12.5 billion in 2005, a new annual record exceeding 2004 levels by 30 percent, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) final “Internet Advertising Revenue Report,” MarketingVox writes. Search, classifieds, display and rich media all continue to grow at healthy rates, according to the report. In 4Q05, internet advertising revenues totaled a quarterly record $3.6 billion, or a 34 percent increase over the same period in 2004.

CSTV Upfront: Fresh TV, Broadband Programming

During its upfront presentation Wednesday, College Sports Television (CSTV) Networks announced its projects for next season, including five new original reality series for TV and four new programs to be available only CSTV.com, MediaWeek reports. The network also announced that it would be airing the NCAA football game between Notre Dame and Air Force on November 11.

Nielsen Outdoor Launches in L.A.

Nielsen Outdoor is expanding its GPS-based ratings service to Los Angeles, as part of plans to deploy the new technology-based measurement service in the top ten media markets in the U.S., MediaPost reports. Los Angeles follows the launch of Nielsen Outdoor in Chicago. The service also operates in South Africa. Nielsen said it would begin recruiting a sample for Los Angeles in May and expects to deliver data in the fall.

Philip’s Files Patent to Lock Remote Controls during Ads

Royal Philips Electronics has filed a patent, not yet approved, that would prevent viewers from switching channels during advertisements and viewers of pre-recorded shows from fast forwarding through ads, AdAge reports. News of the application had bloggers and TV watchers up in arms, and Philips quickly issued a statement which pointed out the fact that the system would allow the viewer to choose, at the beginning of a movie, to either watch the movie without ads or watch it with ads. “It is up to the viewer to take this decision, and up to the broadcaster to offer the various services,” the company said in a statement.

TechTarget Launches IT Marketing Blog

IT media company TechTarget this week launched its first blog, My Educated Guess-Marketing Answers for IT, BtoB reports. The team will tackle common IT marketing problems and suggest “educated guesses” based on their own experience. The blog will also give marketers a chance to suggest their own solutions for IT marketing troubles.
