According to predictions made based on a new research report from Merrill Lynch, this year’s broadcast upfront presentations could last through the summer, ending in modest gains for the Big Four year-over-year as larger gains by ABC and Fox balance out further losses at NBC, writes Mediaweek.
Merrill predicts that ABC will again lead rival networks, with its upfront commitments increasing by 7 percent to $2.23 billion. Thanks to Fox’s ability to appeal to younger demos, the network could get a large portion of the estimated $300 million in freed up ad dollars emerging from the consolidation of The WB and UPN, which would help Fox reach its projected growth in upfront sales of 12 percent to $1.78 billion.
While NBC has seen its prime-time ratings drop 14 percent season-to-date, network ratings are expected to continue to slide. Merrill predicts that NBC will decline 3 percent this year, solidifying $1.84 billion in upfront commitments.
Merrill projects that CBS will “be up more modestly given its weaker ratings and already larger share,” bringing up its share of ad dollars by 1 percent to $2.63 billion - the largest total of the top four broadcasters.
