Six more people on trial for participating in a scandal to exaggerate the circulation figures at Tribune Co.’s Newsday and Spanish-language newspaper Hoy pleaded guilty last week to federal conspiracy charges, Newsday reports. The Chicago-based Tribune Co. has reserved $90 million to reimburse advertisers who overpaid on account of the inflated circulation figures.
Newsday has admitted to inflating its circulation by nearly 100,000 copies on weekdays and Sundays between 2000 and 2004, while Hoy doubled its reported circulation, according to the prosecution.
Along with two other executives found guilty of participating in the scheme, Louis Sito, vp for Hispanic media at Tribune Co., pleaded guilty in April.
