U.K. Newspapers Suffer in May

The Sunday newspaper market in the U.K. has sagged, with the Sunday Independent falling by 12.01 percent and The Observer slipping 8.47 percent in May, Brand Republic reports. The Sunday Mirror, The People and News of the World dropped only marginally, with 0.57, 0.55, and 1 percent falls for the month, respectively.

Dailies are faring better in the first month of the slow summer season, with most mid-market and quality categories seeing slight circulation increases: the Daily Express was up 1.53 percent and rival Daily Mail was up 0.81 percent. Tabloids were down slightly overall, with the Daily Mirror reaching its lowest circulation figure in recent history.

In the quality category, The Guardian was up 1.76 percent, the Independent up 1.7 percent and The Times up 1.33 percent. The Financial Times was down 2.4 percent.

Meanwhile, London’s Evening Standard was up 8.29 percent thanks to its redesign.
