Pride Radio Launches in Chicago

Clear Channel Radio Chicago’s WKSC-FM’s HD2 Side Channel will be the new home of Pride Radio, which serves music, entertainment and spoken word content especially for the Gay population. In addition to being broadcast in HD2, Pride Radio will be available on line at www.kisschicago.com.

Interestingly, last summer, Clear Channel Outdoor pulled a billboard ad for Gay.com in Boston a day before the contract was set to expire, following complaints from the Article 8 Alliance. The ad had been on Boston billboards since early April, but five complaint calls to Clear Channel earlier in the week prompted the removal of the ad.

The annual market value of gays in America is an estimated $610 billion, according to advertising agency Prime Access. And it grew more than 28 percent last year, as advertisers realized it’s a lucrative market they can’t afford to ignore.

But some companies have found themselves smack in the center of a political debate about gay rights. Ford, for example, recently pulled ads in certain gay publications after the American Family Association threatened to boycott the company based on the automotive company’s advertisements in certain gay publications.

“Chicagoland is home to one of America’s largest gay populations, and our new Pride Radio channel is designed to be a voice and a source of entertainment for the gay community,” said Darren Davis, Clear Channel Regional Vice President of Programming. “The music will be mostly upbeat, dance-oriented, and energetic. It’s an idea that’s so fabulous; we just had to do it in High Definition on HD Radio.”
