‘Napoleon Dynamite’ Finds Home in Preston, Idaho

The movie Napoleon Dynamite is seeing some buzz in the rural town of Preston, Idaho, as the town recently celebrated its second annual Napoleon Dynamite festival, the New York Times reports. The movie was filmed on location in the small community in 2004.

The festival features a tater-tot eating contest and tether ball games. The movie has conjured a cult status following, and fans come from as far as California and Connecticut for the festival. The movie is about a misfit who tries to get through high school. He becomes popular by performing Michael Jackson dances and by helping his friend, Pedro Sanchez, become class president. Many fans who attend the festivals wear t-shirts which read: Vote for Pedro.

Napoleon Dynamite was filmed with a small budget of $400,000 and has not received awards or recognition by Hollywood standards. However, the film has gained notoriety among college students who were primarily responsible for boosting box office profits for the movie to $44 million.
