NBC will make the premier episodes of Sony’s Kidnapped and Warner Brothers Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip available for Netflix subscribers before they arrive to TV. There are 5 million Netflix subscribers.
According to Broadcasting and Cable, it is believed to be the only promotional deal between a network and the largest online movie rental service scheduled for fall. However, the deal does not mean Netflix won’t enter into promotional arrangements with other broadcast and cable networks in the future.
CBS is in the early stages of discussing promotional ideas, but to date has nothing to report. Other networks such as ABC, Fox and The CW have stated they have not discussed any deals with Netflix.
NBC will create DVD’s of the premier shows six weeks prior to the debuts. The special DVD’s will include preview trailers of the network’s other new fall dramas. They will be mailed to subscribers of Netflix once they are added to their personal queues on Netflix.com. For people who show early interest in the offer, the promotion will be extended to September 17.
For the first time, Scripps Network is posting a TV show to the web before it is broadcast. HGTV network’s first broadband webisode will launch October 17, on HGTV.com five days before the TV show, My First Place, airs. Viewers can watch anytime that week before the series premieres on Saturday. The series features couples, singles, and families moving into their first homes.
Starting last year, there were a string of shows that premiered in places other than TV as broadcasters looked to create word of mouth before shows aired. Scripps Network posted My First Place on the web before its broadcast. The Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim property debuted content online prior to its on-air broadcast and the WB network made the entire first episode of Supernatural available on Yahoo seven days before the show aired.
