Billboard Awards Honor Sunset Strip, Times Square

The 7th Annual Sunset Strip/Times Square Billboard Awards were held recently in West Hollywood with the two top awards, Billboard of the Year and Tall Wall of the Year, going to creative on the Strip. “Weeds” from Showtime won Billboard of the Year and “Glove Tree (GAP)” won Tall Wall of the Year. Both were on CBS Outdoor billboards.

Nearly 50 finalists were presented awards in categories such as fashion, entertainment and consumer goods. Agencies, art directors and creative directors were also included in the awards presentation, Media Life reports.

According to Media Life, advertising on billboards and walls on the Sunset Strip and Times Square has a tendency to be more innovative. For example, the Sunset Strip has shown creativity on its billboards despite heavy restrictions placed on advertising by the city of Los Angeles. Most billboards in the city are restricted to 24 by 48 feet in size. Contracts for the billboards are usually for months instead of weeks, giving advertisers the opportunity to rotate their creative ads.

Even with the restrictions, creative tends to be innovative, says Tim Fox, CBS Outdoor tall wall manager. “It’s the one place where you can introduce edgier campaigns.”
