Boston Globe to Sell Front Page Ads for Sections

The Boston Globe will begin selling ads on the covers of its Business, Sunday, Real Estate, Sports and Food sections beginning as early as August 6.

Unlike the Wall Street Journal, which earlier this month announced it will be selling ads on its front page, the Boston Globe reports that its front page is not under consideration. The Globe did accept front page ads earlier in its history, but accepted its last one in the mid-1960s.

Ad space on the front pages of sections will be available beginning on August 6 for the Business and Real Estate sections, and shortly thereafter for the other sections. The Business and Real Estate ads will be 3-inch-high strips across the bottom of the page, similar in size and shape to the ads the New York Times recently began accepting for the front page of its Business section.

Early results for the sales of the ad space on the Times Business section’s front page have been “encouraging,” according to Times vp Catherine J. Mathis. Companies that have purchased the space include MasterCard, Eos Airlines and Bank of America Corp.

Executives with the Boston Globe would not say if any of the front page ads have been sold yet. The New York Times and The Boston Globe are both owned by The New York Times Co.
