‘Visual Radio’ Launches in London

Radio listeners in the U.K. will soon be able to visually interact with their favorite shows.

O2 has launched “visual radio” - a visually enhanced way of listening to radio on mobile phones - on Virgin Radio across London this week, according to VNU Net. O2 customers can listen to any station on FM but now, when tuning to Virgin Radio in London, using a Nokia Visual Radio enabled handset, they can also receive artist or programming information and graphics such as photos of the artist.

According to James Parton, head of music & moving pictures at O2, 65 percent of people use the radio function of their Nokia mobile phone, and 40 percent of those use the radio at least once a day.

This service opens up new business models to broadcasters and content creators as well as possible new ad opportunities for media buyers, as listeners can be reached in different and interactive ways.

While listening to a Visual Radio enabled FM channel, listeners can switch the interactive service on or off, according to the Visual Radio website. The screen shows users what is playing at the moment, and users can download a ringtone of the song that is playing.
