Facebook to Launch ‘Sponsored Stories’ Ad Unit

Facebook will reveal a new ad unit in coming weeks that will appear within the social networking site’s News Feed platform.

News Feed, which Facebook launched earlier this month, provides users with a self-updating list of “news” items, or alerts, which let users know when members of their network have made changes to their profiles.

The new ad unit, called Sponsored Stories, will be placed in the third position within a News feed, either as a small, banner-like placement or as a video clip, writes Mediaweek. When users click on the ad, the user’s entire network of friends is alerted, who can then interact with the ad.

According to the company, the ad will allow advertisers to harness the site’s social networking dynamic and to leverage social networking behavior.

Facebook has faced a storm of controversy and publicity in recent weeks. When it launched the News Feed, an anti-Facebook group formed on the Facebook site itself, but has apparently been soothed by a series of personal emails from Facebook’s creator Mark Zuckerberg. The group is now losing nearly 8,000 members a day, according to the article.

Facebook also generated publicity for opening its site to any internet user. Previously, users had to have a college or university email address in order to access the site. The new policy, which launched on Sept. 26, resulted in the fastest growth of any single day in the site’s history.
