Despite Ratings Free-Fall, ‘Studio 60′ Has Big Potential

Despite having lost nearly a third of its audience from the premiere, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip could still bring benefits to NBC.

The show achieved a 3.4 on Monday, several tenths above the baseline that NBC could “live with” to keep the show on the air, according to an insider, writes MediaPost. Even if it continues to dip to a 3.0 range, the show’s upscale profile could help NBC leverage broader ad sale packages.

The show, too, has achieved widespread critical acclaim, coming as it does from The West Wing duo, executive producer-writer Aaron Sorkin and executive producer-director Thomas Schlamme. This could help shore up the network’s claim of offering quality entertainment.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip premiered to a 5.0 in the 18-49 demo on Sept. 18. It dropped 16 percent to a 4.2 in week two, then fell another 19 percent to a 3.4 on Monday, trailing CSI: Miami by a wide margin.
