At the International Astronautical Conference this week, an Ohio attorney will present a paper call “In Defense of Advertising in Space,” in which he argues that a congressional ban on space billboards is unjustified, writes AdAge.
The attorney, J.H. Huebert, and Walter Block, an economics professor and Ph.D. at Loyola University New Orleans, argue in the paper that from an aesthetic standpoint, similar forms of advertising already exist, such as on blimps. Congress enacted a ban on “obtrusive space advertising” in 2000, according to article.
In 1993, a plan surfaced from Space Marketing to launch a “raft” of a mile wide to orbit in preparation for the 1996 Atlanta games, which would allow people to view the Olympic rings on the raft through special glasses distributed by the sponsor.
The Outdoor Advertising Association of America was against such tactics then and is still against them. Nancy Fletcher, OAAA president-CEO, is quoted as saying, “We believe in strict spacing between billboards on Earth; we don’t believe in billboards in space.”
