PIB: Lad Mag Ad Pages Trending Downward

The latest figures from the Publishers Information Bureau confirm the fact that so-called “lad mags,” those publications that target young men with glossy spreads featuring juvenile humor and rampant product placements, are losing steam.

In 2006, such magazines as Maxim, Stuff and FHM lost significant ad pages and revenue, and the news from August is grim, MediaPost reports. According to the PIB, Maxim’s ad pages were down 15.9 percent from the same month last year, and revenue dropped 10.5 percent. Ad pages fell 11.2 percent year-to-date and revenue dipped 5.3 percent.

With such declines becoming the norm, owner Dennis Publishing assigned a new editor in chief, Jimmy Jellinek, who seems to be reversing the trend. Ad pages for the November issue were up 26.6 percent over the same last year, though time will tell whether the lift can be maintained.

FHM saw August ad pages sag 8.7 percent and revenue dip 2.7 percent compared to August of 2005. Year-to-date, ad pages are down 17.1 percent, with revenue falling 12.5 percent.

Figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulations indicate that single copy sales on the newsstand for both Maxim and FHM dropped alarmingly over the first half of 2006 compared to the same period in 2005, at 14.1 percent and 6.6 percent respectively.
