Wal-Mart, MyNetworkTV Team for Apparel Push

Wal-Mart is teaming with MyNetworkTV on a multiplatform campaign designed to raise its profile as a destination for higher fashion.

The campaign will include product placement and traditional spots in a MyNetworkTV telenovela, while the network will receive promotions for the coming Watch Over Me series inside 1,500 Wal-Mart stores and in print ads in publications such as Vogue, bought by the retailer, writes MediaPost.

The deal for the Metro 7 line of clothing would appear to be a coup for the struggling News Corp. television network, receiving as it does an endorsement from a major advertiser and gaining much-needed promotional help.

Metro 7 model and spokesperson Dayanara Torres stars in the upcoming series. Wal-Mart and MNTV believe that the promotion makes sense because of that connection, and that Torres, a former Miss Universe, has an appeal among Hispanics. The Hispanic demographic is a strong target for the network, as telenovela programming has been enormously successful in Latin American countries.

The series debuts in December, at a time when most major networks are moving into reruns and holiday specials.

Throughout the first three weeks of the season, MNTV’s ratings were a .4 in its target 18-49 demo. That’s less than half of some of the CW’s struggling shows, the article points out.
