CBS’s Third Place Evening News Better than Last Year

Katie Couric’s CBS Evening News remains in third place after its sixth week of airing, but the program continues to post significant gains when compared with performances last year at this time, when it was led by Bob Schieffer.

Last week, CBS Evening News drew 7.3 million viewers on average per night, lagging NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, at 8.8 million, and World News with Charles Gibson on ABC (8 million), writes The New York Times. The standings were the same among the 25-54 demo, that which media buyers typically use when purchasing air time on the evening news.

Couric’s performance on the CBS News dropped every week since its opening after Labor Day until last week, when the program gained about 300,000 viewers. Last week, too, the program drew about 400,000 more viewers than Schieffer’s broadcasts during the same period last year. That’s an increase of about 6 percent. Equally of note, NBC and ABC news programs were down by about 4 percent when compared with a year ago.
