Arbitron Survey: Spanish Stations Soar, Stern Audience Still Shifting

The Junkies

Spanish-language radio stations in New York snagged the No. 2 and No. 5 spots, while in Los Angeles they grabbed the No. 1, 2 and 4 spots.

The Arbitron summer survey (June 29-Sept. 20) showed that radio stations targeting 18-34-year-olds got a boost, as usual, causing some adult-oriented stations, such as Clear Channel’s WLTW-FM in New York, to lose some share, writes Mediaweek.

Several Clear Channel Contemporary Hit Radio/Top 40 stations were up, and Urban stations also gained share.

Morning audiences are still shifting in New York in the wake of Howard Stern’s move to satellite radio. The shift looks to be moving toward Luis Jimenez on Spanish Broadcasting System’s WSKQ-FM, which is currently ranked No. 2.

Opie & Anthony’s addition to many CBS Radio stations has helped but the Free FM format is taking time to click, with overall ratings for Free FM stations dipping in New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia.

Interestingly, in Washington, The Sports Junkies on WJFK-FM are pulling higher ratings than Stern did a year ago among men 18-34, men 25-54, men 18-49 and adults 18-34, according to the article.
