NBC’s NFL ‘Flex’ Schedule Should Boost Prime Time

NBC’s first “flex” game for Sunday night NFL broadcasts will be on Sunday, Nov. 12, and the network has chosen to air a competition between the New York Giants and the Chicago Bears.

NBC’s new $3.6 billion contract with the NFL allows the network to choose which of the NFL games it will air in weeks 10 through 15. Afternoon games scheduled for Fox or CBS can be shifted into prime time, writes MediaPost. The game between the Giants and the Bears means that NBC will snag a game from Fox - a strong match-up featuring teams from two of the top three markets.

The flexible scheduling was a move by the NFL that will help it prevent late-season games between teams with losing records or no hope of being in the play-offs from being aired during prime time. For NBC, the smart choice should help ward off steep ratings drops. NBC U’s sports head, Dick Ebersol, has said that the flex scheduling was a driving force behind NBC’s willingness to pay such a hefty fee to acquire the broadcasts.

The teams that will play on NBC during weeks 11 through 15 will be announced about 12 days before the game, according to the article. Week 16 - which is during the Christmas holiday - is not open to scheduling changes.
