NBC plans to rearrange its Thursday night schedule come late November, moving struggling sitcom 30 Rock to Thursday at 9:30 from Wednesday and returning Scrubs to air as its lead-in at 9 p.m. The shows will take the place now occupied by Deal or No Deal.
The move signals a return to the network’s classic four-comedy, one-drama format of its heyday, writes Media Life. My Name is Earl and The Office will remain at 8 and 8:30 p.m., and ER will stay in its 10 p.m. home.
Deal or No Deal had been airing three nights a week. NBC may find another slot for the show eventually, according to the article.
The sagging show Twenty Good Years, currently paired with 30 Rock, is leaving the schedule after the Nov. 8 episode. It is unclear whether the show will be back. Both shows have pulled low ratings, with 30 Rock averaging a 2.6 in 18-49s and Twenty Good Years pulling a 2.3, but among industry insiders 30 Rock seems to be believed to have a better chance.
With its switch, 30 Rock will be pitted against ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy - TV’s top-rated show in the demo - and the still-powerful CSI on CBS. While that may be a difficult slot in which to find success, the article claims the show may have a better chance there than in the old slot, where it struggled against ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. Scrubs has a history of holding up against tough competition, averaging a 3.1 in back-to-back Tuesday airings opposite Fox’s House and CBS’s The Unit.
Too, with ER coming on at 10, 30 Rock may draw some viewers tuning in early.
