‘Shattered’ Holds Stock Picking Challenge for Businesswomen

In a nifty PR stunt, Shattered magazine and Barclays Wealth Management have challenged 12 women to a year-long global stock picking competition.

Shattered, a business magazine for and about women, is holding a year-long charity stock picking competition sponsored by Barclays Wealth Management. The 12 female business leaders from around the world chosen to participate in the competition have $10,000 to invest in a virtual portfolio of no more than 10 stocks. In September 2007, the investor who makes the most money will win $12,000 to donate to the registered charity of her choice.

The investors’ results are analyzed in each issue of Shattered, while on a weekly basis their performance is followed on Shattered’s website.

Shattered’s 12 Portfolio Picks players are leaders in their fields, including banking, law, publishing and television, according to Julie Ros, founder and editor in chief of Shattered.

After the first full month of trading for the Portfolio Picks contestants, lawyer Carol Hall holds first place with $10,917.48. She is followed closely behind by financial consultant Natalie Shaw who has made $10,803.94, while NBC’s Lyne Pitts is in third place with $10,559.35. Overall, the 12 players are slightly outperforming the S&P 500 index.
