Verizon’s FiOS TV service is now in 118,000 homes, marking a 10 percent penetration within its footprint of 1.2 million homes.
Churn for the service is under 1.5 percent per month, which means that consumers are happy with it, according to Verizon CFO Doreen Toben, MediaPost writes.
AT&T is also offering a television service, U-verse. Advertisers are keeping a close eye on “telco TV” to determine if it will be a viable competitor to cable. If so, it could provide a new outlet for local spots - potentially a cheaper one, as the telcos may be willing to offer lower ad rates in order to compete with the local sales efforts of cable, according to the article.
FiOS TV is available in 7 states. U-verse is available only in 3,000 homes, making up 10 percent of its 30,000 home footprint. AT&T plans to roll out its service in Houston next month and to reach 15 markets by year’s end.
Telecom companies began exploring TV services in order to compete with cable companies that began offering “triple play” options which included phone service. If the telecoms are successful, they could offer a quadruple play - TV, phone, wireless and internet - the article points out.
