The new owner of the Akron Beacon Journal, Black Press, has fired the newspaper’s editor and plans to run the newsroom under the managing editor, at least for awhile.
Ousted editor Debra Adams Simmons has concerns about the paper not having both an editor and a managing editor. “I think I can say with authority that you need an editor and a managing editor at a major metropolitan newspaper,” she is quoted as saying in Editor & Publisher.
Managing editor Mizell Stewart will run the newsroom after Simmons leaves at the end of Nov., and publisher Ed Moss said the editor position would not immediately be filled.
Black Press Ltd., a Canadian publishing company, bought the newspaper and its website, Ohio.com, for $165 million in June after the breakup of parent company Knight Ridder.
Since then, cutbacks reduced the newsroom staff by 40. Simmons says she “rallied” for the newsroom to keep cuts to a minimum, but doesn’t believe her efforts were a variable in her departure.
