Clear Channel Buyout Signals Growth of Outdoor Market

The proposed takeover of Clear Channel Communications by private equity firms is another sign that outdoor advertising will continue to grow.

While Clear Channel is best-known for its radio stations - it is the largest radio network in the country - it derives 40 percent of its revenue from Clear Channel Outdoor, Marketwatch writes, pointing out that PricewaterhouseCoopers expects outdoor advertising to grow faster than newspapers, radio or most other media over the next five years.

The buyout announcement actually made no mention of Clear Channel Outdoor, of which Clear Channel owns 90 percent, but analysts have said that the suitors will likely be content to keep a business with strong growth potential.

Clear Channel has been building its network of digital billboards, and a sale of the outdoor business now would have the buyout firms ignoring the financial upside from the digital market.
As CIBC analyst Jason Helfstein wrote in a note to clients, “The private equity upside of this deal lies within Clear Channel’s Outdoor businesses, as management has underinvested and therein lies the considerable growth potential.”
