Public outcry against a change in format of a Madison, Wis., radio station has prompted the station to keep airing Air America rather than switching to Fox Sports Radio.
The station, WXXM-FM, had planned to axe the liberal network and begin airing a local sports format on Jan. 1, writes The New York Times. According to a news release, public outcry was, at least in large part, responsible for the decision.
While Air America declared bankruptcy in October and has been in negotiations for a sale of the company, citizens of Madison were devoted enough to the format to launch an online petition campaign that resulted in more than 5,000 signatures, including those from community leaders and dedicated advertisers.
The original decision was made by the station because station manager Jeff Tyler thought locals wanted more local sports broadcasting. Ad sales, too, were floundering, and revenue was down.
Madison businessman and investor in Air America, Terry Kelly, said that the Madison station is one of the top-rated Air America stations in the country.
