The Philadelphia Inquirer intends to launch a special edition of the newspaper, geared toward busy readers, in an effort to boost readership.
The new Express section, sponsored by Commerce Bank and featuring news and editorial page summaries, will launch in early February, according to Editor & Publisher.
The move is one of several new initiatives to “turn this business around,” Brian Tierney, publisher of the Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News, is quoted as saying. Whereas former owner Knight Ridder cut staff, as did Tierney, Knight Ridder did it without having an effective growth plan in place, he says.
Tierney plans to “fix Philadelphia,” though he says that “we’re obviously not going to solve the problems of the media industry.” He says that print ad revenue and circulation are currently stable, while online ad revenue continues to rise.
In addition to the Express edition, plans have included a sponsored TV guide and new websites for local car and real estate listings (PhillyCars.com and PhillyForSale.com).
