The ailing Air America, which filed for bankruptcy protection in October, has reached a tentative agreement to be acquired by Stephen L. Green, chairman of a real estate investment trust that specializes in office buildings, writes The New York Times.
Green has been providing interim financing to the network to help it meet current costs, and his brother, Mark Green - a past candidate for Mayor of New York City and state attorney general - has hosted programs on the network. Mark Green says the sale would begin a new era for Air America, with a new focus on digital content distribution such as internet programs and podcasts.
It is unclear whether Mark Green, who said that he was speaking only as the brother of the purchases, will take on a formal role within the company, or whether programming moves have been decided.
Al Franken, Air America’s most famous personality, will broadcast his last show on Feb. 14. No reason has been given for his departure, but rumors have circulated that he will be considering a run for a U.S. Senate seat.
In August, Air America lost its lease to WLIB in New York and signed on with WWRL 1600, a less well-known station. The network runs 19 hours of programming a day and is heard on 81 affiliates. It had originally faced a Nov. 22 deadline to find a buyer, but the network’s attorney bought more time for the company by claiming it was in “advanced negotiations” with a few parties about a sale.
