‘Penthouse,’ ‘Playboy’ See Circulation Gains; Oprah’s Mag Declines

Penthouse saw the biggest circulation jump for any of the nine men’s magazines tracked by Media Life, in the six months ended Dec. 31.

According to Audit Bureau of Circulations data for the six month period ended Dec. 31, Penthouse’s circulation jumped 40.4 percent compared with the same six month period the previous year, bringing it to 247,184. Total circulation for the magazine rose 10.7 percent to 361,322.

GQ had the second biggest gains in the category, rising 26.3 percent.

Playboy had the biggest jump in newsstand sales, soaring 23.7 percent to 332,123. Total circulation was essentially flat.

The rise in Penthouse’s circulation is likely due to the new vision of management, which may be catching on at last.

Of the five newsweeklies, all but Newsweek had showed gains over the previous year, led by The Economist and The Week with double digit growth. Fast Company and Inc. also saw major newsstand gains, while O, the Oprah Magazine was down 9.9 percent in newsstand sales and 0.9 percent overall.

Martha Stewart Living was also down on the newsstand, but saw an overall total circulation rise.
