Country Returns to L.A. FM

Los Angeles’ KMZT-FM (105.1), owned by Mt. Wilson Broadcasting, is shifting its classical content to KKGO-AM (1260) and will begin broadcasting country music today, The Los Angeles Times reports.

The market has been without a country station since Emmis flipped KZLA to Movin 93.9 in August, according to Radio Ink. That was prompted by the belief that a multicultural city like L.A. needed a station that appealed to a broader audience (New York has also been without a country station for several years).

The move could be bad news for Riverside-based KFRG-FM (95.1). KZLA’s flip gave the country station its strongest showing in recent memory in Los Angeles, where its signal partly reaches, Variety reports.

Classical music hasn’t left L.A. FM completely. It’s still being played full-time at KUSC-FM (91.5) and during the day Monday through Friday at KCSN-FM (88.5), according to the L.A. Times’ story.
