ABC’s World News has scored two ratings victories in the last three weeks, posing a serious challenge to NBC’s dominance in the evening news race.
ABC’s veteran newsman Charles Gibson is slowly but steadily moving toward the top position among news anchors, prompting NBC to make plans to replace the producer of the network’s Nightly News with Brian Williams, writes the New York Times.
While NBC’s broadcast with Brian Williams remains the most-watched evening news show, drawing about 9.3 million viewers each night - compared to 8.8 million for Gibson and 7.5 million for CBS’s Katie Couric - that lead has been eroding over the last year. Katie Couric’s newscast has lost about 120,000 viewers over the past year, from a program that was formerly led by Bob Schieffer.
