‘Economist’ Receives First National Mag. Award Nomination Ever

The Economist, The Columbia Journalism Review and Cookie are a few of the magazines that have been named finalists for the National Magazine Awards for the first time.

Other first-time nominees include Best Life, Metropolis, More, New Letters, Saltwater Sportsman, Seed, and Wondertime, the American Society of Magazine Editors announced. The Economist was nominated for general excellence among magazines with circulations of 500,000 to 1,000,000, and will be competing with titles such as Conde Nast Traveler, Esquire, Gourmet, GQ and Wired. The Columbia Journalism Review is up for best single-topic issue.

Two of the new nominees, Cookie and Wondertime, are parenting titles - interesting, given the fact that the parenting category is one that is feeling pressure from the internet, writes Media Life.

The New Yorker is up for the most awards, with nine, and is once again the leader in the number of nominations. Last year, the magazine tied with New York magazine, National Geographic, Harper’s and GQ, with only five nominations. The year before that, The New Yorker received 10, and 11 the previous year. The New Yorker is also nominated once again for an award in the fiction category. Last year was the first year since 1996 that it had not been nominated in that category.

Esquire and New York are each nominated for seven awards.
